"I was going toward the soccer ball like it was a 50/50 shot with a girl from the other team and I turned away," explains Colleen Rice, as she describes the injury that brought her to Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists (COS). "As my knee twisted, my foot stayed in the ground." Colleen sustained a torn left ACL in the summer of 2015 which resulted in her missing the entire fall season.
"Colleen, like most teenaged female athletes I see, was tremendous, " suggests Dr. John Kelley who treated Colleen. "They tend to be a little bit more serious and I think that helps them with their rehab and the mindset that they are not going to let this beat them, they are going to beat it."
Colleen not only beat her injury, she turned it into an opportunity. Her comeback to the playing field was indeed impressive; she was the team's defensive leader and a key part of the Jonathan Law High School Eagles' ascension to the state tournament and the program's second-best season in school history. She was elected captain for the 2016 season, presented with the team Sportsmanship Award by her teammates and her coaches, and named the Southern Connecticut Conference Comeback Player of the Year in 2017.Colleen also earned an internship at Star Physical Therapy (part of the COS network) and will study physical therapy at the University of Tampa.
Dr. Kelley received his B.A. degree from Yale University and his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency in general surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by an orthopaedic surgery residency at both Yale-New Haven Hospital and Newington Children's Hospital. A recipient of a Sports Medicine Fellowship, Dr. Kelley studied Sports Medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, Inglewood, California.
While in California, Dr. Kelley provided sports medicine coverage for the following professional and college teams: L.A. Rams, Lakers, Kings, Dodgers, California Angels; and Loyola Marymount University, University of Southern CA, California State University, L.A. Branch. Currently, Dr. Kelley is the orthopaedic consult for the local AA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, the New Haven Ravens.
