Custom orthotics are supportive inserts that are custom made to correctly align your foot and ankle. They are inserted into your shoes, replacing the factory made bedding. Orthotics can be made from a variety of materials depending on your particular needs.
Orthotics can be used to help a variety of problems that cause foot pain. Some common examples are flat feet or fallen arches, high arches, plantar fascitis (pain in your heel and/or arch), and metatarsalgia (pain in the balls of your feet). Because orthotics change not only the alignment of your feet but your entire leg, orthotics may be able to help with knee, hip and back pain as well. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you decide if orthotics are right for you.
A physical therapist with extensive training in assessing for foot orthotics will perform your evaluation. The process includes taking measurements of your feet and ankles, a video of your gait pattern, and a plaster mold of your feet in a non weight bearing position. All of this information is used to fabricate an orthotic specifically made for your feet.
